Tips for painting the exterior walls

Exterior wall painting

Painting the exterior walls of our house is an crucial investment for our property. This comes from the fact that it is a very important and technical work for its renewal and maintenance, a work that must be done every 5 to 10 years. By painting the exterior of our house, the property acquires the right aesthetics.

Also a high level of protection from the sunshine and humidity that harms it, but also durability over the periods. Especially in countries where most days of the year there is sunshine, the procedure of painting the exterior walls of a building or an apartment is necessary and imperative.

That way we can maintain the outer of the building in order to look beautiful and be in an excellent condition. Exterior painting has to do with all the exterior surfaces of our home or workplace. By this way we mean the plastered or the  concrete facades of the property, our balcony ceilings, the wooden or metal protective railings.

Also the exterior wooden or metal doors, wooden pergolas and the outer guardrails. Every exterior surface needs the right application and the appropriate products, if we want to achieve the ideal result that is going to aim the triptych: aesthetic superiority, ideal finish and duration in time.

The work of painting exterior walls

In order to have an excellent quality exterior painting, the key is the good cleaning of every surface that is gonna be painted, so we can apply the paint on a clean wall. There are four key pointers in moving your paint around:

1. check the plaster for it’s hollow
2. carefully check for any signs of moisture into the plaster
3. checking the wall forinflated colors
4. cleaning and properly prepare our surface to pass the first substrate, using the suitable material, emaning the primer.

Before you apply the paint, you should scrape and remove the hollow plasters and peels of older paints, to completely clean the wall.

If there is any deep corrosion on the surface, there is a chance that the removal of the loose materials may expose the bricks or iron bars. In a case like this, the damage is repaired and new plastering should be done, before we proceed to the procedure of oil painting.

If there is no deep corrosion, but only simple cracks and shallow holes, then we should plaster the spots when the damage is. This action is followed by the one of rubbing with a sander, just in order to remove the residues from the stucco,  until the moment we will have a wall that is clean and also free of dust or dirt.

After the process of cleaning and when all the surfaces are completely dry, then we apply the primer. This helps facilitates the application and ensures us a uniform surface in the final color. The substrate will bind with the paint and seal our final painting.

After priming, our walls is ready to accept the color of our choice. Remember that the choices of the materials also play an important role. We suggest you choose paints of good quality, that will ensure good adhesion and penetration with high elasticity and resistance to alkaline surfaces, achieving a very good bond with the substrate.

For the exterior walls, we suggest you to choose the silicone acrylic paint, the one that protects from moisture. However, depending always of your needs there are plenty other options .

Use of quality materials in exterior painting

Always remember that exterior paints are completely different from the paints we use for the interiors. Also, each material on the facade or the exterior walls needs a different type of paint.

In the case we want to paint over materials like wood, aluminum, or plastic and plaster, these building elements is having their own type of painting and their own materials for this action.

There are a big number of paints on the market especially for exterior walls, ones that protect them as they are not affected by the environment conditions, the temperature changes, the air pollutants and the sunlight.

An economical solution could be the acrylic water-based paint for outdoor use, that is is suitable for surfaces that we paint frequently. It can be applied to exterior walls, to cement boards and plaster. Even on cement surfaces, concrete ones and generally in places where the surfaces are alkaline .

In case that you want something more, especially the ones that the property is located in an area with humidity, emaning near the sea or into the green, you can use a silicone acrylic paint in the cost of an extra charge.

Silicone acrylic paints are always recommended for exterior walls, as this type of paint can prevent the accumulation of dust and dirt on our surface and allows the rain to wash them away, managing to keep the surface clean for quite a long time.

Additionally, the silicone acrylic paints will offer you excellent waterproofing. Due to the high water repellency they have, the penetration of the external moisture and also rainwater into the wall will be prevented. That’s something  offering you a long-term protection of the surface.

Also it allows the moisture that is trapped inside the surface of the walls to escape with great ease into the atmosphere. In this way we protect them against bloating and also peeling and molding.

The silicone acrylic paint will offer you an excellent performance and also ease of application, while giving you a uniform matte finish of high perspiration.

Exterior wall painting and weather

If we want to paint outdoor, the ideal weather conditions for this procedure are during a day with a relative cloudiness. One with moderate temperatures and also normal humidity conditions.

The right weather conditions can ensure us that the paint will dry properly and an end result that will be durable over periods. The calculation of the amount of color that we are going to need is approximate.

It is based on the performance of the product that we selected per liter and per  square meter. Remember that the calculation of each product concerns an application. Usually the substrates need one coat of application, but the final paints need two  coats.

We believe to have helped you with your outer walls painting. At first it may seem difficult but after a while you will see that it is something not to worry about.

If this is something that does not fits you, there is always the possibility of hiring a pro, to have the best results without the need of your personal efforts.

Take a look below at the different wall color ideas and get inspired. If you like a color or combination of colors you can look for at the wall painting palette.

Painting tip: Before you get the amount of paint you need to paint a room, it is a good idea to ask for a sample to see how it really looks on your wall. The volume of the surface and the lighting of the space can bring significant differences in how a color will show.

Basic properties and effects of colors

It is true that you will find many articles and tips on the effect of colors, what your tastes reveal about your personality and other such fun.

Unfortunately, this perspective often causes us to become overwhelmed when it’s time to start a wall painting project.

It is the least, naive for example, to talk about the color green in general, you are clean and we have only one choice, while in a single colored fan we will find at least 200 shades of it!

For this reason, when friends and acquaintances often ask Gikas Painting what would suit their space, they answer that if they do not study a space and take into account all the parameters, they will never suggest something on foot.

For the exact same reason, all I can do in an article is give some general instructions. In no case are these proposals for a professional space painting, where many more factors must be considered.

The warm wall painting colors

It is a fact that bright yellow is the first color that the human eye detects in a space. That’s why most signs are yellow. So if you want to get attention, it is a good choice, you just have to keep in mind the following:

Yellow as well as orange are associated with cheap products. It is a color that illuminates a space and creates a happy mood, in the right shade and in small quantities. Otherwise, it is just as tedious as red.

  • Your anxiety, stress and impatience will intensify in a waiting room dominated by red, which has been associated with danger.
  • As red tones motivate us and make us more aggressive, it should be used with caution in areas where misunderstandings and quarrels can easily arise.
  • A lawyer who specializes in disputes and divorces should think hard about whether to include it in their color palette.

On the other hand, its capacity and incitement to move make it suitable for places with intense activity, such as a gym.

  • Keep in mind that bright red, yellow and orange on large surfaces are not only tiring for the eyes but tend to de-tune us.
  • In an area where we need to be focused for a long time doing mental work – such as study spaces, tutorials and offices – their use should be avoided or limited.

If you still want to liven up and warm a space, you can do it with shades that contain red, such as some shades of wood, but also purple-fuchsia shades.

  • The more earthy shades of warm colors like coffee are suitable to create the feeling of security and intimacy and promote communication.
  • The warm shades of red, orange, salmon and brown in combination with cream – beige, are ideal for restaurants and cafes.

It is known that these shades whet the appetite, since most foods have this color.

In fact, research shows that the colors of the dishes affect the taste of the dessert you eat, the coffee or the chocolate you drink.

The cool wall painting colors

In contrast, few foods are blue or lilac – so they do not predispose us to food.

So you will not feel warm and familiar, and you probably will not find particularly tasty the food in a restaurant dominated by metal, glass and exposed concrete as well as the cool shades of white, blue and cool purple combined with white lighting.

The same goes for gray and black, which is why restaurant and cafe areas dominated by these colors are likely to fail to retain their customers in the long run. Unfortunately, a wrong modern trend in my opinion, which shows the ignorance of the psychology of colors.

The color white may be associated with cleanliness and simplicity, but when it prevails in a space it creates feelings of coolness, literally and figuratively.

  • Blue, absolute white and some shades of gray belong to the cool colors. Green can be quite cold to warm, depending on its yellow or blue content.
  • Blue, green and turquoise are especially suitable for places where we want to calm down, relax and work together.

They are very suitable colors for health areas and generally for areas that we want to relax, because they alleviate anxiety – some claim that they reduce the feeling of pain. They are also ideal options for beauty salons, hairdressers and spas.

But be careful to combine them with warm shades of wood and not with cold whites and grays, to avoid an icy result – another common mistake I notice.

Combined with a pale warm and earthy shade, they create an ideal atmosphere for relaxation – think of a sunny beach.

Also, these 2 colors are the most favorite of men and women. They refer to water and nature in general, such as coffee to the earth, soil and plants.

  • Blue is associated with security and reliability, which is why you will find it in many company logos.
  • Green, again, has been linked to nature and ecology. If you want to emphasize your ecological awareness or emphasize that your products are natural, it is essential.

In general, the pale shades of cool colors indicate a larger space

There are, however, warm blues and greens and cool yellows and browns, depending on their content in other shades.

  • Purple for example, consisting of blue and red basically, can be quite warm if it contains enough red or tends to be cold if blue predominates.
  • Neutral shades are also necessary in a space, the absolute multicolor is tiring. But they must also be used correctly and without exaggeration.
  • Black as well as dark charcoal are imposing, they refer to expensive services (when it comes to products), but they must be used with caution, especially when dealing with small and not very bright areas.

They are suitable if you want to display something with bright colors, such as a painting, furniture or object, creating a theatrical atmosphere.

However, I would suggest avoiding black and dark gray on walls or large surfaces. Setting the customer up against a black or dark charcoal wall is not a very smart choice. You will make him feel sad and you certainly do not want to associate your space with negative emotions.

Unfortunately, we have seen this wall painting trend prevail in recent years, but it is completely wrong, for many reasons.

10 Mistakes When Painting Your Home Alone!

10 Mistakes When Painting Your Home Alone!

Painting the house yourself may sound like a good idea but there are some tips that will help you get the result you are looking for. You do not need special knowledge and materials, just appetite, enough free time and good mood.

Painting the wall requires attention and depending on your experience you will do enough or a little time to finish. Anyway, remember that it is fun and extremely stressful, as long as you follow these ten simple tips that I mention below.

What to watch out for when painting the house yourself!

1. Not just a hand paint

Even if you paint the wall in the same or similar color that you had before you have to make at least two coats of paint for a beautiful and uniform result. For distant shades, three coats of paint may be needed.

2. You do not clean the surface

You have to thoroughly clean the surface from dust and hairs, because no one likes a wall or furniture with stuck hairs and rubbish on it, which you can not remove.

3. You do not apply primer

Primer is a thin material that must always precede the paint. Creates the appropriate insulation and prepares the wall so that it better accepts and retains the color on the wall.

4. Paint over holes without plastering

The paint on holes from nails and others, does not cover the hole. The best thing to do is to take a small box of putty and a spatula and plaster all the small holes before you start anything else.

5. Re-paint on a paint that has not dried

Always remember that one coat of paint must dry before you start the other. If you hurry, you will result in a wall that will not look uniform and well-painted.

6. You do not protect the plaster surfaces

Protect the plaster surfaces either on the ceiling or below because only then will the painting be a toy, without the persistent cleaning after which it bothers all the housewives.

7. You do not protect doors and furniture well

Gather all the furniture in the middle of the room. Put special nylon covers on furniture to protect them from painting. Also, do not miss the adhesive tape for the doors and all the furniture in which the paint can come in contact.

8. Skip the silicone to fill in the gaps

If you see that there are gaps between doors and wall, do not rush to use paint, because this will not help. Put silicone where there is a gap and then paint your wall.

9. You do not mix the color well

One thing many beginners do is not to mix the paint well, with the result that the first coat of paint differs from the second because some paint has settled to the bottom. Make sure your mixing is up to the bottom and for a long time.

10. You are not wearing all the necessary protective gear

Always try to wear gloves for your hands, and something in your hair, because it is almost certain that you will get them dirty. Your clothes should be the ones that will not bother you if they get dirty. Inhaling the paint for hours is not the best thing, so if it is summer, keep the windows open. For the winter, wear a protection that will help you not to inhale the substances.

Painting the house yourself is fun and takes time and willpower. If you like to do this kind of work, do not neglect it because you will definitely have a good time and the result will justify you.

Τhings you need to know before painting the walls white!

You may be wondering what color to paint your walls and have ended up in white. The truth is that no other color can offer you the elegance that white color offers you. Visually it is, if not the most beautiful, one of the most beautiful colors.

But you have to choose between many colors and the factors that you have to consider are many. Surely you are confused, like each of us, with the choices in front of you. Here are some things to know before you whitewash the walls.

Hue

The white colors with shades of blue and gray are clearer. On the other hand, when there is a shade of red or yellow they are softer and more relaxing. What is best for your home is a purely personal choice.

If your house is in a place where there is natural light then it is better to prefer shades of blue and gray. But if you are not in a place where the house is so light, it is better to choose a warmer color.

Always be prepared

White walls do not forgive mistakes. If the painting is not done properly, be sure that it will be visible. If there are stains that appear, use a primer before you start painting. Preparation is the key to getting a job done right.

Think lighting

In rooms with plenty of natural light, white paint can look different during the day. Try a sample of the color you want and see what it looks like in the morning, at noon and in the afternoon.

To illuminate low light areas, it is better to use a cooler shade of white that will reflect light from the luminaires in the room.

Combine color with space

Before choosing the color of the room, carefully examine the floor and the cabinets of the house. Make sure that the shade of white you choose matches the rest of the home decor.

Give color to the decoration

If you decorate your home or a room with only white colors, it is most likely to become boring. To avoid this, use a variety of colors on furniture, pillows, fabrics, rugs and decorations.

Find your favorite shade

Once you find your favorite shade of white, look in the companies to find the color you want exactly. The color and shades vary from company to company, so it takes a lot of searching to find what you are really looking for.
